
The Easingwold branch of the North Yorkshire County Library is located at the bottom of
Tanpit Lane, just before it joins the North West corner of the Market Place.
The building was originally erected in 1862 as the Church School. The date is inscribed above the porch with the words 'Learn or Leave'. The initials H.A. on the central chimney are those of Henry Ainslie who was instituted as vicar on 3rd June 1856. It was largely due to his efforts that the school was built. The E.N.S. is for 'Easingwold National School' as the 'National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church' contributed to the school.
At 5.30pm on Thursday 2nd March 1961 the building opened, after a conversion costing £3,500, as the Easingwold branch of the North Riding County Library. The official opening ceremony was held on Thursday 7th September 1961. The old brass bell was removed from the belfry and now hangs as a decorative feature inside the library.
